iT'S STreeT arT THurSDay! with Malibu picture of the day - Thursday, October 1, 2015

Dear Street Art Lovers and Other Lovers of All Kinds,

Today I am giving you "Three Easy Pieces."

Artist, ces53, 14-Forty, paint on retaining wall (detail).

See above.

Artist "Clown", Name art, paint on cinder block.

Artist unattributed, Eyes on Org Chart,
paint on stucco and sheet metal.

There is a small stretch of Hyperion Avenue which connects East Hollywood to the bridge that leads into the City of Glendale. It is notable because you will find quite a bit of street art there. There are some fully actualized compositions which I will show in coming weeks, but there are many creative "decorations" or "accent" pieces which have a completeness to themselves, but which the artists have mounted to enhance the context in which they sit. (Or at least that's how I interpret it.)

Today I am putting up three of these "smaller" (in scope) works to give you a flavor of what these Silverlake neighbors choose to share with each other and the world which zooms by usually at about 45-50 MPH on that little winding stretch.

My favorite of the three is at the top. We have what looks like the too-wise serpent of Book of Genesis fame rendered as a stylish and stylized red rattlesnake. You will probably never see this as you drive that street. You MUST be a pedestrian or a passenger heading toward Hollywood as it is on a retaining wall near the top of a hill, probably at the equivalent of a fourth or fifth storey.

There is also some very typical name art of "Clown" down below your knees at one place and this very Modernist rendering of a mobile sculpture made of eyes. I believe these eyes adorn a building that contains an architect or some other designer.

There is more, but to me, this is the best of the bunch.

AND NOW BACK TO OUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED SEASCAPE:

Two looks today. It's a bit early so the shadows are long and the light is a bit golden as the sun hangs low yet. It'll be in the high 80s today, so if you want to play hooky and go to the beach and miss the weekend crowds, why the hell not? It's the first day of October and these hot sunny, sunbathing days are not going to last much longer.

Have a wonderful Thursday.

Love,
Pops

PS: Here's a context shot on Hyperion. It's a snaky street that runs between two hills. You can see the height here. Note that the "Eyes" mural goes over with another eye on the side.

Be truthful and frank, but be polite. If you use excessive profanity, I'll assume you have some kind of character flaw like Dr. Wong. Tks!
