West of Doheny Streetart and Malibu morning pic of the day - Tuesday, February 9, 2016

Dear Family, Friends, and Gentle Readers,

It's time for an excursion into the Out of Bounds Gallery of the "East Hollywood Online Street Art Museum," where we look at stuff on walls (and sometimes floors) outside of our focus on East Hollywood, Silverlake, Los Feliz, and local environs.

Artist Kenny Scharf, Free Forms, paint on museum atrium walls.

I have this theory about street art in L.A. As you get closer to the Pacific Ocean, the sea breezes and the salt air kind of clean up and dust off the grittiness of public art that you will find, and the clean-up seems to start at about Doheny Blvd., the boundary of where I would say "The Westside" begins.

Anyway, I went to the Hammer Museum a few weeks ago to look at the Lawren Harris exhibition before it closed, but in the atrium we had the work of Kenny Scharf all over the walls. This is how Westwood likes its street art--off the street, cleaned up, well-lit, lots of happy faces, positive energy, and such good fun! This is still up if you care to go and see. The Hammer Museum is free, so it's just gas or bus fare to get there.

Artist Lawren Harris, [I forgot the title], oil on canvas.
By the way, if you're wondering what Lawren Harris' stuff looks like, here's a shot of something representative. His aesthetic vision was formed in the first half of the 20th century. I kind of put him into the same school as Rockwell Kent and Agnes Pelton and Georgia O'Keefe who were, to me, artistic Platonists, people who observed their immediate surroundings, but tried to distill the visual elements down to their core, their essence, and yet hold on to enough of the local "flavor" to keep the image unique and "of" the source material (as opposed to going down to a pure triangle or caret symbol, which is where this painting points).

Lawren is a guy, by the way, for those who care. And Canadian. I'm sure you can find a lot more of his stuff on the web if you but look. I don't everybody will like this kind of minimalist art, but I like it.

And here's our Malibu view for the day. We expect another summery day in the 80s, 90s in the valleys. The sun is extremely bright this morning  and it has lightened the color of the sea today.

The sky and sea are almost the same color today. It happens once in a while.

Well, that's it for now. Gotta run into a meeting. Have a great Tuesday.

Love,
Pops

Be truthful and frank, but be polite. If you use excessive profanity, I'll assume you have some kind of character flaw like Dr. Wong. Tks!
