Malibu morning picture of the day - Friday, January 8, 2016

Dear Family, Friends, and Gentle Readers,

It's Friday! Rejoice all ye 8-5'ers. Someone once told me that if you find yourself being WAY too happy on Fridays, it's a sign that you should look for another line of work.

Here's the view on the coast:

Turquoise sky, ultramarine water, with a cloud-lace trim today. Nothing left of Storms #1, #2, and #3. But we await #4 tomorrow. Let's enjoy the sun in the meantime shall we?

And so we come to the end of the first work week of the year 2016. As a writing teacher and editor, I close it out with a brief quote from The Art of Writing by Lu Ji (261-303):

Making It New

Perhaps thoughts and words blend
into a lucid beauty, a lush growth;
they flame like a bright brocade,
poignant as a string orchestra.
But if you fail to make it new
you can only repeat the past.
Even when your own heart is your loom,
someone may have woven that textile before,
and to be honorable and keep integrity
you must disown it despite your love.

-Lu Ji

So how do you "make it new?" You're not going to like the answer. You have to have a full command of what is old. It means studying the past, scholarship, connoisseurship, critical analysis, source critcism, and curating.

So enter the year with the heart to make something new. But know the work of those who have preceded you. They built the road to get you this far. Don't be content to  just dress up their work. Build the road just a little farther. That is my wish for those of you who create.

Love,
Pops

Be truthful and frank, but be polite. If you use excessive profanity, I'll assume you have some kind of character flaw like Dr. Wong. Tks!
