Malibu morning picture of the day - Wednesday, June 17, 2015

Dear Family, Friends, and Gentle Readers,

Welcome to Wednesday. Another typical June day at the coast.

Serial # JG15-11 (17)

No horizon, you can barely see the water, but  I know it's there.

I'm no basketball fan (I have come to appreciate the sport a little more since I've been playing in my employer's Pep Band at basketball games), but I heard on the news this morning that a team called the Golden State Warriors (I assume they're from California then) won some sort of championship against a team called the "Calves" (the Baby Cows?--whatever... I suppose you can buy veal hot dogs at their home games then?). Yea California!

Anyway, it seems a good day then to share this mural found in the Pico-La Brea area that celebrates the L.A. version of the sport.

Artist unattributed, Lakers Legends, paint on brick.

This tribute to the Lakers sits on the side of an auto body repair shop, proudly showing purple and yellow team colors. The two players pictured I suppose are recognizable enough that the artist figured he did not need put their names under their medallion portraits, but just in case, it looks like they are identified cryptically by their jersey numbers 33 (left silhouette, right portrait) and 42 (right silhouette, left portrait) on their silhouetted forms.

I am assuming that the additional numbered jerseys above their heads are numbers they were assigned throughout their careers.

The fellow on the right has the old Inglewood Forum venue depicted in his mandala, so I assume ol' #33 is a player from the deep Lakers past.

The other guy, #42, is obviously a Staples Center kind of guy.

In the middle is a representation of the trophy claimed by either.

Not a bad treatment of polished metal. The artist does a lot better with this inanimate form then the player likenesses.

So there you have a little of the local color enjoyed by L.A. basketball aficionados everyday on the south side. Thank you Anonymous Artist of Pico for your limited palette contribution to the streetscape!

Love,
Pops

PS There was no Tuesday picture. Didn't make it into the office that day.

Be truthful and frank, but be polite. If you use excessive profanity, I'll assume you have some kind of character flaw like Dr. Wong. Tks!
