iT'S STreeT arT THurSDay! & Malibu morning picture of the day - Thursday, April 16, 2015

Dear Street Art Lovers (and Family, Friends, and Gentle Readers),

Tax Day has just passed (no posting yesterday as I was busy helping people), and what character better to get us back than this fellow:

Artist: Alec, Monopoly Man, paint on brick.

Has the Monopolist made off with your money? Or are you the Monopolist who has managed to dodge the IRS and FTB? This easily enjoyed image sits on the side of a toy store on Melrose Avenue, between La Brea and Fairfax. As discussed last week, here's a mural that has commercial purpose for the business within, but gets a message out nevertheless apart from that commercial.

The Monopolist exists elsewhere on Melrose (he's a popular guy there, that place is all about money), and I'll show his other guises at a later date.

But the commercial mural I did want to display that is clearly within my "Museum's" mission boundaries is this:

Artists: Darin Vartanian and Arkind, Glasses Girls, paint on brick.

This piece, rendered in a style reminiscent of Roy Lichtenstein, is just a few steps away from the Buddha on Western that we saw a couple weeks ago. I assume this is the place of business of Chilli Beans, a maker of fashion sunglasses. You've seen their product if you've ever shopped for shades at Target.

The corporate logo is definitely there. It wraps around the corner too and there 's more. However the logo really is lost in the busy-ness and when you walk by this place, the whole wall vibrates with color.

Why are there no guys in glasses? Well, duh, you know the street art aesthetic ... male centric. I suspect the owner of Chilli Beans is probably male too. Whaddya think?

Primary colors are definitely the name of the game here, red, blue, and yellow. This secondary logo on the side elevation is outlined in metallic silver paint.

As a commercial work we have definite bylines for artists, one with even a first and last name. Bravo, Mr. Vartanian and Arkind.

Before we leave our glasses girls, here's an additional detail from the portion around the corner.

AND NOW BACK TO OUR MALIBU MORNING PICTURE OF THE DAY:

Clear as a bell in another blue-on-blue day eh?

Hope you're having a great day and a great week so far.

Love,
Pops

PS: Here's the wall of the toy store:

  1. Isn't Vartanian an ARMENIAN name? If street art is not painted by a black or Latino, it CAN'T be any good ... jez sayin'

  2. Fightin' words mi amigo. Born in East Holly, I'm a "Little Armenian" myself. Good is good no?

  3. With Mr. Moneybags holding that can of green spray paint, I would have called it "Wishful Self-Portrait."

Be truthful and frank, but be polite. If you use excessive profanity, I'll assume you have some kind of character flaw like Dr. Wong. Tks!
